Las Vegas attorney Marshall Blair arrives home to find the drop-dead-gorgeous corpse of Mercedes Wilson stretched out on his bed in a pool of blood—her throat slashed and multiple stab wounds in her chest.
Marshall doesn’t want to become personally involved in helping Las Vegas Metro police solve the crime, but he feels a strong obligation to help find his almost-client’s killer. He innocently volunteers to notify Mercedes’ employer, Argent Mining, of her murder.
BIG MISTAKE!
Marshall soon finds himself caught in the middle of a vast international conspiracy centered around a newly-discovered Rare Earth Element mined by Argent.
The only people who know the secret power of the 18th element have been brutally slain. Marshall realizes that he and his friends are next on the assassin’s hit list—but he doesn’t know why, or who is responsible for their peril.
THE 18th ELEMENT is filled with suspense and surprises. It captures the essence of Las Vegas and its environs—complete with fine and not-so-fine dining, gambling, prostitutes, lovers, losers, and romance.
Nevadium, the new rare earth element, has a tremendous potential—but its value to humanity is not revealed until the very end of this intense thriller! Until you find out … be very careful. You never know who might be listening or watching.
The 18th Element edition by David W Cowles Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
My only complaint about "The 18th Element" is that it ended too soon.Hopefully, that means a sequel is in the works as the characters are so
well written and the plot draws you in so even things you might not have
believed at first seem totally plausible by the final chapter.
Watching Marshall become an adult, even though his dating life remained
that of a horny teenager, was interesting. He started out as a cad, and became
a mensch by the end of the book. His mother must be so proud (read the book
to understand that comment).
One thing I do wish the author had let us in on - where is the restaurant where
He and Frank met so often for breakfast or lunch? I'd like to visit it next time I'm
in Las Vegas.

The 18th Element edition by David W Cowles Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
The charactors were really strong and I liked them. The interplay between the charactors was done well. The book was a very enjoyable read, although the ending was a little bit (and I stress "little bit") of a let down. Because of the charactors, I would probably read more if this is made into a series (and I think it will be)
I rated this four stars. It might have been 5 had the author not been so obsessed with food which had no bearing on the story.
The hero was not too likeable at first though he was better at the end. Unlike the other reviewers I do not wish to see this go any further because I am still upset with the way the Micheal Kaplan books ended and I can see this going that way should there be more.
If you can suspend belief for a while and like to know what people eat, you will enjoy the book. I would bet the police would like all cases to fall into place like this one does.
Many of the books in the recent glut of "Rare Earth Lit" read as though they were intended to be reworked into scripts for thriller movies. This one feels more like a season's worth of a TV crime series. It relies on the interactions among a small group of characters, while others come and go (mostly in fairly gruesome ways) to move the plot along at a nice pace. There is murder, mystery and mayhem mostly set against the telegenic backdrop of Las Vegas, and a plot that revolves around the discovery of a new element in a rare earth mine.
This “eighteenth element” is not argon, as all of the nerds and geeks might have guessed. It is an addition to the list of rare earths, bringing the total to eighteen. I can’t be sure what its atomic number is, or its electron configuration, but this author is not about to let science get in the way of a good story. He has no problem with violating the second law of thermodynamics, either, but it’s all in good fun. Despite all of the scientific flaws, there are some obscure but accurate details, including a description of the creation of a prototype magneto-caloric refrigerator by the Ames Lab and with Aerospace Corporation. The non-specialists will never know what is real and what is not, but why should they care?
There are devices made out of “nevadium” that stir the forces of evil to commit murder – frequently – in their pursuit. There are complicated love entanglements. There are corporate intrigues. There are sports-car fanatics and brothels to keep it all from getting boring at any moment. There is a cameo appearance by the President of the United States (who gives a nice impromptu lecture to the heroes about disruptive economic forces). The author is not shy about misdirecting his readers, so you don’t quite know who the good guys and the bad guys are until the very end, and of course there is a bit of a plot twist to go with all of the final revelations.
The characters and their interactions are nicely developed, and they form the real substance of the book. The science is totally hokey. The law-enforcement procedural stuff is similarly full of holes. There is a strange obsession about food, resulting in lists of menu selections at all of the scenes that take place in eateries of various kinds, but every author has his quirks.
If you like the CSI TV series, you might want to give this one a try. Just dial back your scientific fundamentalism level first.
My only complaint about "The 18th Element" is that it ended too soon.
