What if cancer were a man and it was up to you to track him down and kill him? This book travels through all of the darkness and the light that make up that very journey. It is sad but funny, and heartwarmingly, tragically, hopeful. It goes there, and then comes back, but you will not forget that you have been.
To Dance with Death Beneath the Falling Stars A very short novel eBook Stephen Wagner
I am rereading the book, "To dance with Death Beneath the Falling Star", and appreciating again the author's observations and humor and wild imagination. There are many battles, and I think of the writer as the embodiment of a samurai warrior. "A warrior is worthless unless he rises above others and stands strong in the midst of a storm." Besides reading the paperback book, I also have it on my Kindle so that I can find passages that I find give me advice. For example: "I shall overcome the darkness that I have been presented with - simply continuing to be - regardless of regardless."I find this book very helpful to me and I hope others will pick it up and discover its gems on the battlefield when confronted with sickness, aging and loss. The other reviews here are more elegant than mine as they have captured the uniqueness of this book.

To Dance with Death Beneath the Falling Stars A very short novel eBook Stephen Wagner Reviews
This book is like sitting around the campfire with a man of creativity and insight, who has thought things through after going through a number of experiences he would rather have avoided. The stories he tells are true and often powerful, and always reflect a victorious spirit, even though one suspects there may have been less gunplay in the actual event. It took me awhile to write this review, the book made me think, and I didn't want to do it any disservice in reviewing it. It is well worth your time.
This book has been on my nightstand for over five months. Every night for five months I look at it, feel deeply sorry for the author and his family, consider the frailty of human life for far-too-long and fall asleep. I finally got the hell over my self and picked it up. Why I didn't do it sooner is just plain silly.
It is, after all, a very short novel.
In hindsight I suppose my reluctance was rooted in the fear that I would cry through the whole book - for the author, but mostly for the author's children. This is not that book. This is a book about fighting death, and the author reminds us that we are all doing that. In fact, he contends that chronically ill people have the upper-hand in this fight in that chronic illness leads folks to be hyper attuned to the marvelous little things in life detangling children's hair after a tub, reflecting on the past with friends, and tinkering in a non-expert way with a beloved motorbike. This book reminds us all in a quirky, singularly unique voice that while our dance with death can only be experienced alone, it need not be a lonely experience.
"Stories and ideas have more power than some know. They are what pull us through the darkest moments of the night, and have the power to call morning sun back round again. The sun shines behind clouds -- always." (Wagner, p 92).
This is not an easy book. It is not a book for the faint hearted or for those wanting a pleasant poolside summer read and yet it is a book that stays with you once read and continues to ask questions of you long after it has been returned to the shelf. It is at times brutal in its honesty and yet always gentle and caring in its philosophy and reason. It can be a struggle to read and to understand which is surely as the author wishes thus giving the reader the experience by proxy of the terrible confusion of cancer, its treatments and its consequences. It is powerful, it is moving and it is, at times, beautiful and scaring in equal measure. I would recommend it to all living in the shadow of this disease and to others who enjoy a challenge.

Readers’ Comments
‘A very interesting, indeed clever, take on the battle with cancer. The writing is pretty good although the short chapters are ridiculously short. Dark with elements of humour.’ Male reader, aged 34
‘Philosophical, albeit rather sad. A moving story that is well-written. I congratulate the author on sharing it with his readers. Sadly, the cover is terrible. This book is deserving of much better.’ Female reader, aged 43
‘This author is very, very good. He works well with character and speech. I’m not so keen on the short chapters. The dark detective story is a wonderfully smart way of looking at the battle with cancer. I think anybody suffering from this terrible sickness will find this novel rewarding.’ Male reader, aged 56
‘Not an easy read but still rewarding. The title, I felt, didn’t work for this novel. It felt a bit flimsy.’ Female reader, aged 50
‘There’s a good flow to this book. The writing style has a jaunty sort of feel to it; flowing, a little bit velvety perhaps. I enjoyed the language very much. It felt like a warm blanket to wrap myself in. The subject matter is difficult to swallow. Well done to the author for writing it so bravely. By the way, the cover needs sorting.’ Female reader, aged 67
‘Dark, powerful with surprising moments of humour.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
nice...
This is a great book. The premise, a memoir of a man with cancer as a hard drinking hardboiled detective (and his trusty aquatic sidekick) literally fighting cancer, personified as an evil super villain might sound a bit odd. It is! Odd and emotionally refreshing, and very poignant. It's also absolutely hilarious. Definitely recommend.
